Auxiliary to The Ability Center members are dedicated ambassadors for our mission and organizers of a major fundraiser, the annual Style Show. Benefiting programs include life skills for youth with disabilities, training and placing of assistance dogs, equipment gifting, and college scholarships for local high school students.
Organized in 1936 and reestablished in 1984, Auxiliary members use their time and talent to benefit local people that use programs of The Ability Center.
Auxiliary members also host luncheons throughout the year to connect with like-minded people, listen to informative presentations, and share ideas on how to make Toledo more disability friendly.
In 2019, the Auxiliary to The Ability Center Style Show raised 30,000 for programs and services benefiting The Ability Center.
Next Steps Summer Program:
The Auxiliary supported transportation costs, business clothing, and recreational activities during the time they are living and learning at the University of Toledo.
Money donated purchased one mini-modular puppy playground will provide enrichment experiences for our puppies that are starting their training. Also, included is sponsorship of another puppy which is starting its journey to becoming a service or therapy dog.
Housing Resource Center:
Benefited one-time emergency assistance for funds towards purchases of disability-related equipment that will increase or maintain one’s independence. items such as grab bars, raised toilet seats, shower seats or handheld shower heads to help those with disabilities to live safer and easier at home.
Purchase of an aluminum ramp for a child, increasing their independence.
College Scholarships for Students with Disabilities:
The Auxiliary has assisted The Ability Center in providing scholarships to students pursuing college degrees since 2008. This year $10,000 will be awarded to students.
