Auxiliary members are dedicated to serving as ambassadors in the community, promoting major fundraisers to benefit the programs of The Ability Center. One focus of the Auxiliary is to support the Community Living Program. This role assists ACT in moving people out of nursing homes. Through the Auxiliary’s “Bare Necessities," the Auxiliary takes a hands-on approach in securing soft merchandise used in setting up living accommodations.

In addition, the Auxiliary collaborates with The Ability Center to provide college scholarships for students with disabilities.

Auxiliary History

The Auxiliary to The Ability Center, which was organized in 1936, was reestablished in 1984. The major fund-raising event takes place in the fall. Proceeds from this event are given to The Ability Center to support programs that include Assistance Dogs for Achieving Independence (ADAI), Home Accessibility, Independent Living Assistance, and the Life Skills/Next Steps Summer Program. Additionally, these proceeds support The Scholarship Fund.

In addition to the major fund-raising event, the Auxiliary schedules four luncheons throughout the year including the closing luncheon. The closing luncheon highlights the recognition of the scholarship recipients and the installation of the new Auxiliary Board.
