Disability Rights Advocate
Katie Shelley has long been connected with The Ability Center, starting when she was a Camp Cricket camper back in Summer 2001. Since then, she has been busy with school, receiving her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Western Michigan University, her Master of Library and Information Science from Wayne State University, and most recently, her Master of Liberal Studies with a concentration on Disability Studies from the University of Toledo. Katie is very passionate about disability rights and is excited to be a part of the Advocacy team at The Ability Center. She hopes to implement systemic change through her position as a Disability Rights Advocate.
Constantly seen by Katie’s side is her assistance dog, Petunia, who is a graduate of Assistance Dogs for Achieving Independence, a program of The Ability Center. When they are not working, both Katie and Petunia enjoy spending time with friends and family. Katie is especially fond of reading, watching movies, and music, and harbors a not-so-secret love for musical theater.
