Brooke Coan, 19, first learned about The Ability Center when her family moved to the area in 2020. One of her goals when she became a consumer was to find a job. Brooke has a developmental disability which made school challenging, so she decided that working a job would be a better fit for her after high school graduation.
To help prepare for the job hunt, Brooke participated in The Ability Center’s Youth Leadership Forum in the summer of 2020. “My favorite part of the Youth Leadership Forum was seeing the different kinds of interesting speakers come and talk to us,” Brooke said. She credits the program with helping her gain more confidence. “I was very shy and didn’t really like talking to people,” Brooke said. “Because of this program, I became more confident in myself.”
As a result, Brooke is currently working part-time for Barry’s Bagels and is enjoying her work. In the future, Brooke would like to explore a career as a tour guide in a history museum.
