Letter from Ability Center Executive Director, Tim Harrington
Last year at this time, I was standing in line at the U-Haul store.I was dropping off my van to have a trailer hitch installed. Across the room, a customer was speaking to a clerk about whether they could rent just a ramp that pulls out from behind a moving truck. It’s funny how one’s ears tune in when help is needed, and U-Haul wasn’t going to be the answer this time. I stepped out of line to see if I could help. This gentleman and his elderly mother were indeed looking for a portable ramp to use for his father who uses a wheelchair. The son was planning on hosting Christmas dinner and had no way to get his father into his home. Dad was a WWII veteran and is a double amputee.
Together, we walked outside to get out of the crowd. I pulled out my phone and while on speaker confirmed that The Ability Center did indeed have a loaner portable ramp in stock and that it was ready for pickup. These ramps were purchased by our Auxiliary specifically to fill this kind of need.
When I hung up the phone, the woman looked at me in shock, then turned to her son to say, “This is a miracle.” Thirty minutes later, they picked up the ramp from our Equipment Loan Program with hugs and Christmas wishes.
