EDITORIAL FROM THE TOLEDO BLADE

Once again Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority has budget problems that this community doesn’t own. As a public transit agency, it is the people’s role to determine the fate of the organization. However, when the dialogue turns to TARTA, it becomes “they” not “we.” They, meaning TARTA’s leadership, have been unable to secure the people’s support for public transportation. Given proper motivation, community leaders and elected officials can make things happen. It’s not happening here.
The proposed cutbacks by TARTA are devastating to people with disabilities and seniors who are unable to drive. The plan literally throws this community’s marginalized populations under the bus. We the community can do better. It’s time that TARTA has new energized board leadership that is evaluated based on strong community engagement and public support.
