To best serve our eastern counties of Ottawa, Wood (and Sandusky), we have an Outreach Office in Port Clinton. Currently, the office houses two specialists ready to assist with information, advocacy and training issues.

Young Leaders with LifeFlight
2009 Youth Leadership Program: Enlightening and Successful
Ottawa County ACT, along with the Ottawa County Family and Children First Council, have been hosting this year’s two-week Youth Leadership Program. Focusing on young people, ages 13 to 19, the program helps with instilling a sense of self-awareness, empowerment and pride in one’s self. Amongst the many things done, the teens and young adults visited the county jail, justice and 911 offices, met with disability advocates, took field trips to area organizations and attractions, like Ottawa Wildlife Refuge, where they assisted rangers with animal capturing activities and learned about local ecosystems and how they are managed. They went to Terra Community College, in Fremont, to explore college opportunities, spent a day in Lakeside, at the Chatauqua on the Lake and received instruction on nutrition from Marcia Jess, of the OSU Extension Office.
They visited Island Adventures Family Fun Center and, on June 18th, they had an opportunity the learn about rescue and support service, enjoying demonstrations by the Port Clinton Fire Department, Sheriff Department SWAT Team, Emergency Medical Technicians and a very special visit from the LifeFlight Air Ambulance Team.

Youth Group Graduates
On Friday evening, June 26th, from 5 pm to 6:30 pm, the group will hold a graduation ceremony at the Ottawa County Senior Resource Building at the Riverview complex on SR 163. The teens will be cooking and serving a dinner to those attending. The will be receiving a certificate and a t-shirt sporting a design on which they collaborated with Dan Wilkins, area advocate, artist and Manager of Public Relations for ACT.
“It’s amazing to be a part of young people coming of age.” said Tory Heilman, Manager of the Ottawa County office, “With all that we offer, do and share with these guys, they literally blossom in front of us. It is an honor to witness such growth.”

The two agencies co-sponsor this program each summer and it is open to young people living with disabilities in Ottawa County.
