Defiance Satellite Office

ACT Defiance Satellite Office

Kristina Noe, Executive Director of the Defiance satellite officeThe Ability Center of Defiance (ACD) opened in 1994 to assist people with disabilities in Defiance, Henry, Fulton, Williams, and Wood counties with independent living services. ACD is here to serve people with disabilities by working to remove physical and attitudinal barriers to access and full participation in the community. We recognize the needs of people with disabilities and are committed to taking the Independent Living philosophy directly to their communities.

As a Center for Independent Living (CIL), ACD is committed to advocating for individuals with disabilities and creating opportunities that enable them to achieve and maintain the highest degree self-sufficiency and control over their lives.

Advocacy Services

Cindy Raker, Office Manager

We advocate on local, state, and national levels for systems change that empowers people with disabilities to live independent lives. Individual Advocacy assists children with disabilities in obtaining the most inclusive education possible. It also aids consumers in negotiating the human services system.

Information and Referral

ACD provides access to disability-related information and linkages to community resources that assist people with disabilities to maintain their independence.

Independent Living Skills Training

Ash Lemons, ADA Compliance

Assists people with disabilities to develop the skills necessary to live independent lives. Training can occur in areas of housing, personal assistance, transportation, money management, health and wellness, leisure skills, and self-advocacy.

Housing Services Coordination

This service involves providing information on accessible housing in the community, as well as one-to-one consumer housing assistance.

Peer Support

Charlotte Monroe, Information and Referral

Peer-to-peer support encourages people with disabilities to share their bank of knowledge about living day-to-day with a disability. This program can encompass everything from one-to-one training to exploration of community options.

Other Services

ACD organizes periodic workshops on disability-related topics, in addition to hosting local disability support groups, such as the Parkinson Support Group, the Brain Injury Support Group, the Post Polio Group, and the Epilepsy Seizure Disorder Support Group.

ACD also provides space for American Sign Language classes.
