Auxiliary to The Ability Center
History
The Auxiliary, which was organized in 1936, was re-established in 1984. The major fund raising event takes place in September. Proceeds from this annual event are used by The Ability Center to support Independent Living Programs and Camp Cricket, a day camp for children with and without disabilities. In addition to the Style Show, the Auxiliary schedules three luncheon meetings with guest speakers and special events.
Focus Statement
The Auxiliary to The Ability Center of Greater Toledo (ACT) is dedicated to being an ambassador in the community, promoting major fund raisers for the benefit of programs sponsored by ACT. One of the primary programs of ACT is the Independent Living Program. As contributors to the Independent Living Program, the Auxiliary plays a pivotal role in assisting ACT in moving persons out of nursing homes. The Auxiliary also takes a hands-on approach in securing soft merchandise used in setting up living accommodations. This program, named “Bare Necessities” provides bedding and towels to these individuals as well. In addition, there is a Scholarship Fund to support students with disabilities in obtaining a college education.

SILVER SCREEN STYLES – 2009 Style Show a Big Success!
The Auxiliary to the Ability Center of Greater Toledo held its 25th annual style show, Wednesday, September23rd at the Stranahan. The theme this year was Silver Screen Styles!
Co-chairs, Mary Beaber and Barbara Bettinger, worked throughout the summer months with their many committees to put together a glamorous luncheon and style show.
This year’s vendors, raffle baskets and silent auction items were awesome! A leather, fur-trimmed jacket was donated by Roth Furs and also auctioned off. Co-chairs, Pam Bettinger and Joyce Stenberg were in charge of production of the style show and we were bedazzled with fashions from Elegant Rags, Gallippo’s, Meig, Ragazza and Roth Furs. It truly was a “Hollywood” event!
This is the major fund raiser for the Auxiliary and proceeds will go to the Ability Center for use where needed. In the past, proceeds have gone toward the Ramp Project, Independent Living and Camp Cricket. The Auxiliary also provides items needed for clients who are transitioning into the Independent Living program and scholarships for young men and women with disabilities to help with college tuition.
Silver Screen Styles was a labor of love for Auxiliary members and the Ability Center family!
